Portland, Ore. — The Boxer track teams had one final meet this Saturday before the Northwest Conference championship game. The conference championship game will take place this Friday and Saturday at the University of Puget Sound. Rookie Angelica Gatica-Gomez was the star of the Boxers meeting this weekend.

Saturday’s competition started with cold but sunny weather before a storm rolled in with hail, thunder and lightning. Gatica-Gomez had to run the women’s 400m against a field of 8 other runners. She lined up in the middle of a hailstorm and the shot went off. Gatica-Gomez raced down the track to win the race in 59.21. It’s a lifetime record for Gatica-Gomez and ranks him third in the Northwest Conference standings. Just after his 400m win, a loud flash and thunder sounded overhead, and the track and field meet was delayed for about an hour. It was quite an unusual weather situation for the PNW.
