NEWPORT, CA – The Loyola Marymount University Lions men’s team ran at 57and Annual Newport Regatta in Newport Beach, Calif., this past weekend.

The Lions brought two boats to the regatta to compete against six notable West Coast male crews. The Varsity 8+ competed for the James C. Jorgenson Collegiate Men’s 8+ Cup and the Novice 8+ for the Larry M. Moore Collegiate Men’s Novice 8+ Cup.

The first race of the day for the Lions was in the Novice 8+ A-Final. The crew jumped off the start line with a strong hold on third place and continued to fight despite the boat breaking during the 2000 meter race.

LMU crossed the finish line in seventh place overall with a time of 7:10.7 minutes, seven seconds behind UC Santa Barbara (7:03.3) and fifty-five seconds behind the winner of the event, Orange Coast College (6:15.7).

The Varsity 8+ crew followed soon after for the A Final event. For the first 1,000 yards, the Lions battled arc ball against UC Santa Barbara and Orange Coast College. In the end, LMU finished sixth with a time of 6:25.7 minutes, just five seconds behind Long Beach State (6:21.1) and twenty-six seconds behind UC Irvine (5:59.0), the winners of the event.

Following the Newport Regatta, the Lions prepare for two days of competition at the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay on March 26and and 27and.

The first spring regatta draws crews from across the country to compete in over 50 events. The Lions will take two eights to San Diego, the Varsity 8+ and the Novice 8+. They will compete for the Men’s Collegiate Varsity Active&Fit Now Cal Cup and the Men’s Collegiate Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup respectively.
